Wanderer's Wife
Share
We have transformed the traditional Wanderer’s Wife pattern by Jen Kingwell into an
adventure in paper piecing. Come join us for this 12-month journey leading to a completed quilt top – if you keep up!
The background consists of 1” (finished) strips. To determine the amount of fabric you
need for the background, divide the total background yardage by the number of colors you choose to use. You need yardage for the background strips (as opposed to fat quarters; likewise, jelly rolls probably would not work well).
We will construct the approximately 75 blocks of many designs in class using paper
piecing with vellum or transparent paper. During the last several sessions, we will combine the blocks with the background blocks to complete the quilt top.
You will need access to a computer and a printer. In addition to the pattern book,
Wanderer’s Wife by Jen Kingwell, we will provide you with the patterns converted for paper piecing and the cutting instructions electronically.
Fabric Requirements:
Background: 3 yards total
Blocks: Assortment totaling ca. 2½ yards (fat quarters, layer
cakes, and/or stash would work well for most blocks)
Borders: Sufficient to suit individual determinations of the final size
Backing and Batting: Sufficient for the size of your final quilt
Supplies:
Wanderer’s Wife pattern book
Sewing machine in good working order, complete with necessary cords and foot pedal
Open-toed foot for your sewing machine
Jam brand or other translucent paper,

Cutting mat Small or medium sized

Your preferred method for labeling and
organizing.
For this project, I will use a baggie for
each different-sized block (all of my 4”
blocks in one bag, all of the 5” blocks in
another, etc.) At the end, I will use a
baggie for each Section of the quilt and
will move the various-sized blocks into
those baggies. I will also write labels for
each of those baggies. Some people write
right on the baggies.
